This is Elkinite

Elkinite is more than a website. It is a platform that uses story to build a stronger and more positive Elkins and Randolph County. We want to use the Internet to think locally. In thinking locally, we are filling a void in what we see, hear and read about our community online. We want to fill the void with enthusiasm for our community. We want to create a sense of pride in place. We want to create a sense of unity within our communities. We want to buck the stereotypes that plague us. We want to break the dominant narrative of negativity found in local and national news sources. Elkinite is a dose of optimism coupled with chance to discover adventure, history, and all things that make Randolph County great.

Who are we?

We are a collection of locals who live in, work in, and love Randolph County. By no means are we professional journalists, but we do strive for accuracy and a small amount of uniqueness. Think of Elkinite as an escape from the ordinary in traditional media. We are not competing for breaking headlines, but rather stuff that isn’t regularly written or even talked about. Our contributors have a real passion and vision for Randolph County, which we hope catch fire through our stories. We’ll be writing about anything and everything that we consider local…If you are from here, live here, moved away from here, or just enjoy our little piece of heaven, take some time to get to know the site and think about contributing. In addition to local stories, we will also be expanding to provide an events calendar later this summer. So join us, as we look to support and promote our local, homegrown communities in Randolph County.

The Name

We wanted to find a name that reflected the area as a whole, while remaining memorable, unique, and having some visibility to the outside world. That turned out to be a little more difficult than we anticipated. After many suggestions (and one almost successful name), we landed on Elkinite. We like to think of Elkinite as a train depot, the starting point for transit. Elkinite doesn’t start and stop with Elkins; it is the central hub for sharing and growing the entire county.

The Tagline

That’s where the tagline comes in, Grow Randolph. This is our call to action; we are encouraging our readers to get involved, tell stories, and make a difference. This is our shot at trying to make a difference and we’d love for you to join us.
