Meeting as the Elkins Municipal Election Canvassing Board on Monday night, Elkins Common Council recounted Fifth Ward ballots cast on or before the city election held March 7. Entering the recount, Dave Parker, the incumbent council member, had 48 votes. Challenger Cody Thompson, who requested the recount, had 44. The recount found no miscounted votes. However, an additional provisional ballot was counted at this meeting because its original exclusion had been the result of a clerical error in the county clerk’s office. When that vote was opened, it was found to contain another vote for Parker, leaving the final total as follows: Parker: 49 Thompson: 44 Parker and the rest of the newly elected or reelected city officials will be sworn in for their new terms on April 1st.
