White Oak Basketry with Alan Miller Andrew Carroll June 14, 2016 Alan Miller will be teaching a craft class in White Oak Basketry during Week 5, August 2-9, 2015. Augusta has offered craft & folklore classes since our workshops began in 1973, and we’re working hard to build our craft & folklore program with some new classes and old favorites. We have craft & folklore classes scheduled each week this summer. Week 5 is also Old-Time Week, Vocal Week, and American Vernacular Dance Week. The class covers tree selection, log splitting and the making of stakes, splits and handles for white oak baskets. Students will learn to make a small Williamsburg and a shopper style basket. Returning students will have new projects. Minimum age: 16. Materials: $12 for hickory handled carbon steel knife. Alan Miller is a retired WV state forester and forest entomologist. He was inducted into the WV Agriculture & Forestry Hall of Fame in 2000. The process of making white oak baskets start with selecting the right tree. Since his retirement, Miller has continued to go to the woods for his craft, and has been making white oak baskets for fifteen years.
