Stonecarving with Kevin Stitzinger

Andrew Carroll
June 14, 2016

Kevin Stitzinger will be teaching a craft class in Stonecarving during Week 5, August 2-9, 2015. Augusta has offered craft & folklore classes since our workshops began in 1973, and we’re working hard to build our craft & folklore program with some new classes and old favorites. We have craft & folklore classes scheduled each week this summer. Week 5 is also Old-Time Week, Vocal Week, and American Vernacular Dance Week.

Come and explore stonecarving as a stress free, meditative and highly creative art form that you can do at home with minimal setup. The instructor will guide you through the process of designing, roughing out and finishing your own alabaster sculpture. The class will focus on the safety, tools and techniques necessary for soft stone, but these are transferable to any rock type. This is an introductory course, however those with a bit of experience are welcome as well. Materials: $100 includes alabaster stone and a set of basic tools for students to take home.

Kevin Stitzinger is a stone sculptor living in Green Bank, West Virginia. His work focuses on three dimensional sculptures and low relief surface carvings with nature oriented themes. Kevin has ten years of experience sculpting stone and a formal education in geology and geography. He has found success as a stone artist by combining his understanding of stone structure with a variety of carving tools and techniques to highlight unique characteristics of the stone he selects. Kevin also has twenty years of experience in education and finds great satisfaction in teaching others how to enjoy the processes and results of stone work.

Register today to reserve your space, visit http://augustaheritagecenter.org/, click “REGISTER,” and select craft & folklore for the week of your class. More information is available at https://augustaheritagecenter.org/augusta-schedule/craft/.
