Gourd Weavings with Suzi Nonn Andrew Carroll June 14, 2016 Suzi Nonn will be teaching a craft class in Gourd Weavings during Week 4, July 26-31, 2015. Augusta has offered craft & folklore classes since our workshops began in 1973, and we’re working hard to build our craft & folklore program with some new classes and old favorites. We have craft & folklore classes scheduled each week this summer. Week 4 is also Bluegrass Week. Explore the endless possibilities of combining different techniques of basketry on a gourd. Students will create four unique gourd baskets choosing from coiling (or reverse coiling), couching, random, twining or twilling. Gourds will be enhanced with color and individualized with beading or natural embellishments. The final project will be a large gourd with a tapestry weave. Students will also enhance 20 Tennessee spinner gourds using different coloring techniques. Materials: $75-$100, depending on student projects. (All Levels) Susan (Suzi) Nonn has been interested in natural crafts all her life, and for the last fifteen years she has concentrated on gourds. She teaches workshops at Gourd Festivals all over the United States and at Harford Community College. She is the coordinator for the college’s gourd group. She is the author of Cut-Out Gourd Techniques, a book written for gourd artists to improve their skills with the mini saw. Suzi has a very laid-back, down-to-earth teaching style that makes everyone feel very comfortable. She covers all aspects of a project, from alternative materials to pricing and marketing. Her goal in teaching is to start a class as an instructor but leave as a friend.
