Cajun History & Culture with Ann Savoy

Andrew Carroll
June 14, 2016

Ann Savoy will be teaching a folklore class in Cajun History & Culture during Week 1, July 5-10, 2015. This class is part of our 5-week folklore series this summer. Savoy will also give a public lecture one evening during the week. We have craft & folklore classes scheduled each week this summer. Week 1 is also Cajun/Creole Week and Early Country Music Week.

Students will explore many aspects of Cajun life, from dance steps to cooking to Mardi Gras. Learn a little Cajun French, visit with guest musicians and learn about the history of the music of this unique area.

Four time Grammy nominee Ann Savoy has been performing and recording Cajun music the world over for four decades. Her bands are Savoy Doucet Cajun Band, Savoy Family Cajun Band, The Magnolia Sisters, and Ann Savoy and Her Sleepless Knights. She has recorded twenty CDs on the Vanguard, Rounder, Arhoolie, and Memphis International labels. Her most recent endeavor is her gypsy swing string band, Ann Savoy and Her Sleepless Knights, whose song “O Comme Les Nuits Sont Longues” is featured in the movie All the King’s Men starring Sean Penn. She recorded a CD of duets with legendary pop star Linda Ronstadt, Adieu False Heart. This CD was nominated for two Grammys. She appeared as a musician in The Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood and worked to associate music producer with T Bone Burnett of All The King’s Men. Her book, Cajun Music: A Reflection of a People received the Botkin Book Award and is considered to be “The Cajun Bible”. At present she is working on volumes two and three of this history of Cajun music series. She continues to perform, produce, travel, write, do photography, and anything else this great world has to offer!
